IN SEARCH OF JOY

IN SEARCH OF JOY

Written & Directed by KAREN BROWN

Set in the cold industrial landscape of Michigan, IN SEARCH OF JOY by Karen Brown is a powerful stage play about Black love fighting to survive beneath the crushing weight of race, colorism, history, and inherited pain.
Voneisha, an educated dark-skinned Black woman, and her husband Kevin, a streetwise extremely light-skinned man raised in the inner city, struggle to protect their marriage from forces both outside and within their community. As the play explores the lingering scars of the paper bag test, self-worth, desirability, and cultural division, Voneisha’s three girlfriends become witnesses and reflections of modern Black womanhood, while a persistent white cab driver symbolizes the historic intrusion of white desire into Black intimacy. Through raw humor, emotional honesty, and poetic confrontation, IN SEARCH OF JOY asks a haunting question: how do Black people protect love, dignity, and joy in a world determined to divide them from themselves and each other?
